The first thing I noticed about writer Elena Díaz Bjorkist was her delightful personality and her turquoise angel pin on her  blouse. We hit it off immediately! Turns out that Elena is in the process of putting together a Mujeres Writing Conference on Saturday, June 11 in Tucson, AZ. She is part of an organization called “Sowing Seeds” a group of women that come together monthly to write and empower themselves by telling their stories. They are currently in the process of publishing their anthology, “Our Spirit, Our Reality: Sharing Our Stories”.

Elena shared a few best practice tips for those thinking of putting together an anthology.

  • Get as many contributors as possible to help generate content for the anthology
  • You must meet regularly and focus your writing prompts
  • Try getting a grant to off set cost of producing your anthology
  • Search for themes (family, faith, self etc.) that will allow you to give to direction to your writers
  • Decide if your anthology is multi-genre or if you will stick to one genre
  • The more contributors you have the more people to help promote the anthology
  • Don’t stress out about the title of the anthology. Usually it emerges organically.
