04.19.10: Sandra Posadas & the Chisme Box challenge

Sandra Posadas is the Proyecto Latina feature for April 2010. In the spirit of National Poetry Month we are presenting our first ever Chisme Box Haiku Challenge: We want your chismes in the celebrated 5-7-5 format.  Join us on Monday, April 19th @ 7 p.m at Cedahalia’s Cafe 1010-12 S. Western.

Sandra Posadas is the feature for Proyecto Latina, April 2010.

Sandra Posadas is a second generation Puerto Rican woman born and bred in Humboldt Park, Chicago.  She is a teacher, artist, illustrator, and actress.  Her projects include: cast member of the Vida Bella Ensemble and creator of the jewelry line Coqueta Creations by PiXie.

Sandra presents her poetry at various Chicago venues and has had the honor of reading with Gwendolyn Brooks, Sandra Cisneros, and Ana Castillo. In 1990 she won the Gwendolyn Brooks Young Poets Award. She was mentored byLuis Rodriguez, and in 1991 her work appeared in an anthology of Chicago Poets by Tia Chucha Press.

A bilingual educator in the Chicago Public Schools for 13 years and a teacher educator that presents her progressive early childhood approach–Sandra was recently nominated for the Illinois Golden Apple Award.

Sandra also presents her art work at various local venues including the University of Illinois at Chicago Symposium for Women of Color in 2008.  She holds a B.A. from Roosevelt University and is currently a working on her M.A. in Bilingual/ Bicultural Education at DePaul University.

Sandra strongly believes that art can educate and inform and through her different modes of expression–poetry, canvas, and performances—she encourages  audiences, from participants to spectators, to  explore, reflect, analyze and examine themselves in relation to their place in society and transform the reality in which they are living.
